John Elwell's "Pat Curren and Crew aboard the Nirvana" for TSJ v11#1There are few images I've come across in any surf magazine that whirl around in my (admittedly cavernous) skull as consistently as this one. Since that initial discovery it has been a constant companion, far too applicable to all of my sentimental notions of masculinity to be ignored for long. It is both foil and foe.
