Important Stuff

Getting to Long Beach mid week, during rush hour traffic on a school night might be a crazy ask.  But if this is all it might be, fear can be a great motivator.

SMASH up to more good.

From the guys who brought you other things... SMASH is bringing you this stuff too.  Becoming, if not becomed, just never becalmed, the epicenter of broader surfy culture around town.  Word. Represent.

I love Your Blog

I have this job. We have this job. It is a kind of "hurry up and wait" type of job that means we sit around for a while, then work like crazy for a while, then sit around for a little while, then revise the work we made like even crazier for an even shorter while, then we sit for a long while again. The virtuousness or viciousness of the cycle directly proportionate to the perspective of the time frame, the question wrapped up with value of the down time, the value of the up time and the contingency of existence-value via said factors. Again the whole thing begins and ends in perspective. So Antonio and I sit and wait for things, then we work like crazy on things. Are the things good? Are they worth the time? Do they make the world a better place, or, depending on one's value system, do they fill our pockets with enough money to someday continue or discontinue the existing process? This is not a question to answer here, now. Or maybe it is. But it's not, really. What is answerable, at nearly every moment, is the question of what sort of spin one would like to put on it all. At least that's what the process calls for.

Not Quite, But I'll Take It

Not quite as sexy as Pipeline Jersey a week ago, but I'll take a dip in the water no matter how I get it. A blubbery point, somewhere north of here.

Or as is the latest vogue...

EBNY is Digital Ninja

So I've been reading lately about these people called "Digital Ninjas." Laugh it off if you will, but apparently they exist. They are advertising people who write blogs and make tweets and watch blogs and read tweets from the comfort of their desks in advertising agencies. They exist under a number of monikers. "Digital Ninjas" is one of them. It struck me, as I learned about this career path, that I might be perfectly suited for that sort of thing. I mean, I like blogs, I work in advertising. I don't know tweeting real well, but I could get used to that, maybe. I mean, if that's the way the wind is blowing. But then I find out that the big hit against them is that they don't actually make anything. They don't actually do anything. They just watch internet trends and package them up as more internet trends.
Antonio and Mark Tesi have been friends for a long time. Mark moved to California a couple years ago on the heels of his surf shop burning down and started working for Roxy and last year Antonio and I tricked him into sending us some footage to play with. We played with it all a good while ago but as these things have a habit of having it we've had to wait a number of months before posting it up. But here it is, our official Roxy thing.

So much for Digital Ninja's not doing anything.

Making Friends with The City

Rebecca Olive, over and down and under, posted a nice contemplation on the subtle intricacies of understanding our environment. We have the opportunity during every interaction with our daily context to make sense of it what we can. Sometimes this is purely a physical activity, how we move through the city in a chronic way. Other times it involves a far more physically acute reaction to impetus. (See videos one and two above.) One need but step a touch further to realize this is the very center of our nature, the question of how we choose to deal.

Today's Thoughts

The Dirty Cycle

It's that time of the year when thing heat up a little, people start to seep back into the sea.  It is with a guilt-laden heart that I approach this part of the cycle.  A heavy head hung knowing yet again I haven't fulfilled the promise of another winter. The usual excursions to California produced their typical bounty, the time spent in the water in New York found embarrassingly minimal.  And now with every passing degree, the stirring of the populace anew, I join the market forces in frothing as if it were a something we've been waiting for.  But we haven't.  And I promise, it hasn't been waiting for us.

Mollusk Board Swap

The annual, or semi annual, or quasi annual Mollusk Board Swap is that rare chicken nugget of sweet goodness that, for some, operates like a pot of gold. It is almost always worth the gander.
