There has been a two foot (ish)(+) swell running from the moment I stepped off the plane.
We drove straight up to the old stomping grounds in Santa Barbara for a professional fly through and some sentimental fever dreams of old sights.
We caught C Street small and fun twice, and had it not been for a sleeping infant, would have dipped our toes in the hallowed Queen's waters as well.
As it was we arrived back in North County to that same half-thump of body whomp material, the break in front of Red's going typically summer closeout.
The best part of the East Coast to West Coast binge banks on a three hour head start everyday. This has begun to wane after a week and a half, getting me up only an hour ahead of everyone else now, a scampering to the popular spots replacing my habitual laconic stroll of head nodding to all the old timers who begrudgingly accept my presence for a handful of days.
This morning, annoyingly late up, I found myself surrounded by a slightly younger crowd, but more importantly, an electric one as the lightning not only brought a rainbow off the reef, but bars of bolts on all sides.
Scampering in a different direction being de rigeur.
Highlight so far?
This moment of no swell surfing yesterday as my nieces got their first taste of the good life.

A little more Zak Bush
Zak's show doesn't dwell so fully on surf photography. New York has shifted his focus, or rather, broadened it. Watching artists evolve and take their unique vision from one medium, one subject or one process to another is a rare treat. It is one of those things one comes to New York to be around.

Zak Bush Photo Show Videographic!
Here's the latest film I made about our upcoming gallery show at PF Gallery. Zak Bush is a tall photographer given to thoughtful pauses. His work, sorta on the fast track of visibility thanks to his intuitive understanding, hard work and fundamental talent, will be going up on the gallery walls next week for an opening reception fiesta on Friday May 2nd. More info about that here. So super excited to have his work around for the next month.

Taxi Driver, SMASH Style
Here's the final installment in the series of B Movie style satirical surfy reworkings of some classic New York scenes we made for the SMASH Fest. Our take on "Taxi Driver" starring Ty Brewski and Joey Clams.
And here are the previous spoof-o-matics.

Another Oldie
There is this moment in our digital age when our harddrives fail and our dreams are crushed. We being the stupid, slow moving "first adopters" of wholesale commitment of our lives to little spinny flashy discs that seemed so imperturbable, so indestructible in their digital one and zero intangible state. How could something be gone that wasn't there? How could you have put so much faith in something that wasn't there in the first place? What is this cognitive double bind dissonant ringing in my ears? And then some youngster skips along and says "Oh! you want that stuff back? Lickety split!" And Bob's yer uncle. Here is an old one that has magically popped back into existence thanks to one such young buck with a spangly doohicky that has retrieved at least some of my old dreams. Reminds me of the weather these last few days in New York. Made back when I used to carry around one of those digital point and shoot cameras that only filmed cruddy video in 30 second clips. Back when that was the new fangled thing. It all seems so quaint now.

The Godfather Returns
I would be a smarter lad were I more comfortable with talking on the phone. But I don't do it easily. I get all jumpy and distracted and I instantly start thinking about things I ought to be doing other than talking on the phone. This causes me no small amount of heartache. I think it may push the people closest to me temporarily further away than I'm comfortable with. In fact, when I look at my everyday demeanor, I think half the things I do have a similar effect. It's not just confined to the telephone. Here we have the work of my son's godfather and one of my oldest friends. He runs around and videos all sorts of neat things. And he has great taste in music. I'm profoundly proud of my friend, my son's godfather and uncle. And I'd like to take this opportunity to say to him:
"Dear Kevin, I'm sorry I never pick up the phone. Sincerely, Todd"

An Oldie
I don't know if I've ever uttered a truer statement about my own failures (outside that Catholic movie...)(or anything I utter in couples therapy.)

Miss Reef
When a friend calls you up and asks if you'd be up for putting together some Miss Reef footage, you weigh the pluses and minuses. You know, all those pluses and minuses. Well the pluses won out. Or was it the minuses? A little recent work for Reef.

An Oldie
Perusing some films for an upcoming event, I came across this old one I'd forgotten about completely. I miss the old days sometimes. The old days where Antonio and I would hang out everyday in our posh office in Soho. Easier times, simpler times...

Lapsed Catholics Skips Along
Or plods, as the film may make the case. But our movie has now been seen in more than a few major metropolises and we are grateful for that. Thanks to those that have championed it. Now we gotta make another one somehow.

In the grand tradition of stultifying videos from Endless Bummer (New York), here is Yuri Shimojo, Naomi Kazama and Mike Ming attempting to translate the recent Glide magazine article about Toddy.

Fish Fried
Saturday was super fun. The waves were there. The sun was there. The boards were there. I didn't shoot for long, obviously there were other things to do, so this is just about every inch of the footage. Apologies to those I didn't capture in the act (and apologies to those I did.) Good times.
