Far more east on this island than I am at the moment. Not that it's doing him any good.

"Fall is beautiful. Looks like an amazing day. I wouldn't know. I didn't have board."

Congrats Jandi.

Ian and I lived together in Santa Barbara a decade and some years ago. We'd drive around in his Vanagon and smoke clove cigarettes. I'd play the bass and he'd play the guitar. The second photo is the first water shot I ever snapped. Ian at Santa Claus, classic early summer session.
Lately, he treats me to some fantastic time at Old Mans when I am on the West Coast.
He recently got hitched to Julianne, a partnership that fills me with confidence and some smileyness. Apparently, it was done secretly (to me) and apparently on those bluffs there. I can't wait to meet up with him at SanO this winter and give him a hard time about it.
But for now, congratulations old friend.

Skating and Helicopters

The Widge and I used to run around a bit in Santa Barbara. He's a super fluid skater, a fantastic painter and a great guy to go surfing with. When I moved up north, he and Ian would haul boards and guitars up the 101 and we'd play music and wrinkle our noses at water. He joined us in New York a while ago. We see each other irregularly. It is one of those enigmatic shames one has to live with. Anyhow, he made this rad film with which I have absconded and posted here. It is damn fine relevant.
God bless Townes.

An Uncommonly Warm October Day

Ridiculously sentimental music by Chad & Jeremy

One of the joys of participating in the film festival was meeting up with other surfing film makers (or film making surfers) even if I didn't get to see their films. Elizabeth Pepin is one such member of the category. We spent some time talking San Francisco shop, film making shop and surf shop.
After so much shop, I was a little sore to have missed the screening of "One Winter Story," a film she co-directed about Sarah Gerhardt, the first woman to surf Mavericks.
While she was out here, Elizabeth tooled around and took some beautifully thoughtful photos at Rockaway and gifted me some via email. Check out her skills here, and try to catch "One Winter Story" if you can, I've heard it's a beaut.
