Why participate in a blog about surfing? Why throw oneself head on into a virtual community that has only the most seemingly tenuous ties to real people and the contextual activity? On the face of it, to my troglodyte sensibilities, this seems to be an antithesis of the kernel of surfing. The experience. The physical envelopment by something so much larger. The tactile breath of the intangible. So tossing words and images comprised of simple ones and zeros around some make-believe digital biosphere just initially feels like so much of a red-herring. But uneasiness hasn't lasted long. There is simply too much to enjoy. Too much to inspire. Maybe it's not for everybody, and maybe not for forever, but for now it's good enough for me. This morning we were gifted in the Endless Bummer email in-box an image of Rebecca Olive's new board, maybe not oddly and perhaps less than coincidentally, from Vouch, the board-makers whose blog I recently posted here. Bec just had her boards stolen, and this is the new beginning. If we were in San Francisco, someone would come over and burn some white sage around that thing. Pleasant journeys to you, around the globe there.
