Facebook Surfing: Phil & Josh

A couple G&P old boys, Phil and Josh turn up every year to play in the annual beach volleyball tournament in their speedos. The magic of Facebook hooked me back up with them this week (way out of season) and I spied some nice pics they'd apparently like to hoot about. I reckon I might too. So there you go.

Stepping off the plane in Newark yesterday I was assaulted by texts asking if I would be playing in the Diner Old Boys semifinal soccer game slated for three hours later in the evening. Ah yes, back in New York again.

Before leaving North County I made the decision to retire two boards mostly based on assumption that if I no longer had them I'd be forced to buy a new board the next time I go out there (or, more likely, stumble into another freebie used board gifted by a friend.) Either way, that sort of sloughing energy might produce some unexpected results. Besides, after getting Jackie Moonbags out on both participants in my "California quiver" he subsequently stated that I don't own a surfboard at all, just a couple floaty sorts of things that probably get in the way more than they help. So I stuffed the tensomethingorother foot warped screwball corkscrew banana and the ninesomethingorother squishy buckled toothpick under the house into the board graveyard with the ten or so other elder statesmen to be abused by all sorts of family and friend alike. And abused they will be. Into oblivion, I'm sure.

That last day though, that last day, the RM Clunker did its tenuously flexy job with aplomb on the walling-up pulling-tide set waves at Swamis; feeling, as it always has, as if it were about to snap mid face; feeling, as it always has, that every knee paddle would leave a lasting indentation. Laid to rest with laurels, these boards were.

We won our game last night. Or tied. I never did figure out the final score. All I know is that I gave Raisin one hell of an assist.

Onward into the cold Atlantic.

There's a bunch of surfers who live in a sharehouse across the road from me...I walked outside one morning to see this...I instantly thought...mmm...shouldn't that be in the recycling?

Josh Dowling is a really innovative shaper who has been in the game for years, he started out airbrushing for Mocean Surfboards (Lorne,Vic) in the late 80's, but was always into shaping & surfing (of course). He has gone by afew different shaping names over the years, Lucid & Speedneedle & was also known by friends as Tree due to the incredible height of the man.
In recent years he has been heavily involved in the development & trialing of different foams & woods. He was one of the people involved in the development of Fire Wire technology (where there was some dodgy business practice & he didn't get the cred he deserved) & he uses similar methods in shaping under his JDS label. Alright, Alright

The Quasiannual Autumnal Hibernation is coming to an end. Gears are shifting back to a natural order of other things. The hiatus we've been hiatusing on is drawing, we hope, to a close. Sessions have been few and far between. The crush of professional necessities, while still, basically, a crush, have slackened in their domineering nature, as we have willed them to fit into our general sensibility. It's funny how long it takes to get over the loss of Summer and the onslaught of people suddenly feeling like they need to make things, then deciding you're just the right person to make the things for them. Have I said enough?

There are still some serious rumblings from out on the island of a Lentini inspired shoehorn of sorts. We are returning to our vigorous research for a contribution. More news coming soon.

Scott Massey et al have just released the latest version of RRR Project doings. Word on the street is for some sort of pop up show somewhere soon in celebrations. Or something like that.

A little while ago, in the depths of our working despair, we received a little something about this great blog via the fast mail. Check it out.

We've also received entreaties from the nice folks over at Surf Science about adding some observations to their compendium of thoughts. Haven't felt up to it, obviously, but check out their site.

Photo show in the works for mid winter doldrums to be produced and presented by the Endless Bummer types and friends. It was initially scheduled for the NYSFF timings, but things fall through as they do. But we are reviving the project with big hopes and good intentions. More later.

And finally, the ever-diligent Rebecca Olive is still on the prowl for the great surf magazine Kurungabaa and sent through these eerie bits of inspiration.
